PROTON’s anticipated B-segment SUV, the Proton X50, rolled off the production line during an event held at the carmaker’s Tanjung Malim site. The X50 will be sold in four variants – Standard, Executive, Premium, and Flagship.
The Proton X50, a second product of the PROTON-Geely partnership, will be assembled locally at the Tanjung Malim plant. The localisation of the vehicle will result in the contribution of at least RM 1.8 billion annually to the Malaysia’s automotive vendor community through parts and components purchases. With another RM1 billion invested for the Proton X70, the combined annual contribution to automotive vendors will be in the region of RM2.8 billion.
“As a company that manufactures locally, PROTON’s growth means more money is injected into Malaysia’s automotive vendor ecosystem leading to more jobs and wealth creation. This is vital at a time when COVID-19 has significantly hit Malaysia’s economy,” said Dato’ Sri Syed Faisal Albar.
PROTON’s Tanjung Malim plant saw a RM1.2 billion expansion last year to accommodate the production of its X70 and the soon-to-be-launched X50, which will feature level 2 semi-autonomous driving features such as autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, autonomous parallel and perpendicular parking, blind spot monitoring, and plenty more.
The voice recognition function that was first fitted to the X70 also retains in place in the upcoming SUV, including 4G connectivity with e-Sim capabilities, smartphone application remote functions, and keyless entry. A seven-speed DCT gearbox will power the X50.
As of August 2020, PROTON remained ahead of its sales volume from the previous year as the industry continues to fight the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
On a lighter note, PROTON announced that customers can place their bookings, for a booking fee of RM500, at showrooms beginning 16 September, coinciding with Malaysia Day. Customer preview sessions will be held at four separate locations beginning 19 September, though these will be closed-door events.
PROTON also announced a contest for all Malaysians to vote for a slogan for its new SUV. More details can be obtained from the company’s official website, starting tomorrow (16th September 2020).
